In Beirut, the Christians feared an Israeli defeat and were relieved it never came. At the same time, Maronites in particular were hoping that the Israeli army, which ended up capturing Egyptian, Jordanian and Syrian territories, would seize Lebanon and subsequently extricate the Christians from Syria’s persistent intervention in Lebanese affairs, especially security matters. 3 The days thereafter were hardly comforting or quiet in Lebanon. The PLO felt its status rise in the aftermath of the military defeat suffered by the Arab states in the June War.

Like the Communists, Nasserites and the SSNP—but unlike the Maronite Christian parties noted above—the Guardians delineated in detailed programmatic fashion the ideas that would guide action. The party was an intellectual endeavor before it was a political enterprise. It sought not personal gain or power as such, but the actualization of a complete vision of Lebanon based on noble ideals. It wanted to move and energize people by teaching and evoking deep, passionate feelings for sacred Lebanon.
