In the middle part of the lower surface, there is a foramen for the nutrient artery of the bone. The anterior edge is the insertion site for the pectoralis major muscle medially and the deltoid muscle laterally. As stated above, the posterior edge and the upper surface of the bone are the insertion sites for the clavicular head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle medially and the trapezius and deltoid muscles laterally.
From here, its bundles are directed obliquely upwards until they reach the lesser tuberosity of the humerus on which they insert. A number of bundles also insert on the crest of the trochine. Innervation of the muscle stems from two roots of the brachial plexus (C5 and C6) from which derive the superior subscapular nerve for the upper muscular bundles and the inferior subscapular nerve (C5-C7) for the lower bundles. Its action is threefold: 1. It adducts the humerus. 2. It draws the head of the humerus towards the glenoid cavity.
It is innervated by the teres major nerve, a branch of the lower subscapular nerve (C5–C7). Its action 30 moves the arm posteriorly and medially; in practice, it adducts and internally rotates the arm. It exerts a synergistic action with the latissimus dorsi muscle.
