Trinidad (794,624 population) and the neighboring island of Tobago (33,333) taken together had a population of 827,957 in 1960. Tobago was linked to the colony of Trinidad by imperial fiat in 1889. 2. A plural society is racially and/or culturally complex, and has usually had a colonial history of minority dominance by whites over the majority of nonwhites who may constitute ranked or parallel groups. 3. Trinidad and Tobago’s colonial parliament (the Legislative Council) was unicameral and had nominated as well as official members in addition to those who were elected on a restricted franchise prior to 1946, and by adult suffrage thereafter.
These four friends not only supported us throughout the fieldwork, but also provided us with hospitality on return visits to Trinidad. To left and right of the village rise wooded cliffs. Inland, behind Moruga, there is said to be much distilling of “bush” rum. The court was a long room, with the officials and defendants at the front, and rows of benches for the public and defendants waiting for their case to be called. At the beginning of the morning session, there were approximately 65 people in court. At the most there cannot have been more than 20 Indians. In order to maximize ventilation, all windows and doors were wide open.
