Fontaine IBM Institute for Business Value, USA ABSTRACT Many organizations have invested a significant amount of time, energy and resources in overcoming intra-organizational barriers to sharing knowledge.

It is questionable if this view can capture the nuances of more complex issues such as tacit mental models, relationships, degree of involvement and depth of knowledge in an information sharing community. People are active sense-makers who often share common views but also conflict and disagree. While they may like to make sense of things through codifying knowledge and formalizing processes, they often prefer informal dialogue and networks to share knowledge (Martin, Lycett, & Macredie, 2003).

Each of these one-to-one encounters is not only time consuming, but also prevents individuals with more relevant questions from obtaining access to the knowledge sources. CoPs can help balance a knowledge seeker’s need for access with a knowledge source’s need for time management. For the knowledge seeker, communities can be seen as a way of making personal connections with more experienced people in the organization (Lesser & Storck, 2001). Through these interactions, relationships are formed that can break down hierarchal boundaries and increase the probability that they will get a response to an inquiry.
