Having used classical Cassegrains ranging from 6 to 30 inches in aperture, I have never been impressed with their image quality. Not only do they have limited fields of view because of their long effective focal lengths combined with strong field curvature, but the images themselves often seem to have a “softness” about them – certainly not like the crisp, sharp, well-contrasted images of a refractor or a Newtonian reflector. Many of the optical companies that traditionally offered Cassegrain reflectors commercially to the amateur astronomy market have switched instead to the Ritchey–Chrétien form discussed below.

This not only provides a vivid demonstration of the Telescope Basics 25 rotation of the planet on which we live, but with lines of people waiting to look through the telescope (at a public star party, for example), it naturally limits the viewing time per person! And the slow drifting of objects in the eyepiece – especially faint ones such as nebulae and galaxies – causes their images to move across varying parts of the retina, often revealing subtle details that might otherwise be missed.
