Having used classical Cassegrains ranging from 6 to 30 inches in aperture, I have never been impressed with their image quality. Not only do they have limited fields of view because of their long effective focal lengths combined with strong field curvature, but the images themselves often seem to have a “softness” about them – certainly not like the crisp, sharp, well-contrasted images of a refractor or a Newtonian reflector. Many of the optical companies that traditionally offered Cassegrain reflectors commercially to the amateur astronomy market have switched instead to the Ritchey–Chrétien form discussed below.
