BRASIUS held its first annual Encontro Nacional de Filosofia do Direito in 1980, and its first annual Congresso Brasileiro de Filosofia Jurídica e Social in 1985.  Several volumes have appeared that trace the history of political Page 31 ideas in Brasil with a view toward informing the Brasilian public of its political and juridical heritage.  Other works include Fundamentos da criação artística and Fundamentos da crítica de arte.  In 1980 a São Paulo publisher, Edições Loyola, initiated the publication of seven volumes designed to provide expositions of, and commentaries on, the educational philosophy of Freire, written and edited by three specialists in Freirean pedagogy: Alberto Torres Novoa, Simões Gorge, and Brian Wren.

He happens to be a Brazilian whose philosophical work lies outside any particular tradition of his native country and belongs totally in the European and North American world.  Arthur Giannotti, Bento Prado Júnior and Marilena Chauí.  However, unlike as in some other Latin American countries, the association between the questions of national character and philosophical thought seems to have died out long ago, almost at its very inception.  Not an original solution, one might add.  Quite a few Brazilian philosophers—even though still looking to Europe and North America—are decidedly thinking by themselves and about themselves.

And curiously, because of its interest in changing social realities through philosophic methods, its objective is probably closer to nineteenthcentury positivism than that of analytical philosophy.
