35 3/9/07 10:22:25 AM basic techniques Painting a Chinchilla This is another good exercise for creating sphere-like shapes in an animal form. This chinchilla is one of my favorite examples. Not only is it adorable, it is extremely round, and the five elements of shading are clearly visible. The overall shape is easy to draw freehand. It is similar to building a snowman, stacking one sphere on top of another. The painting process is a bit more complex in this project. The textures in the fur are more visible, and the pose is more complicated due to the hands and feet.
2 round Reference Photo Carefully study the shapes of the photograph, and draw what you see. Notice that the eyes are not circular like those of the cat on the previous page. Circles seen in perspective become ellipses. Note There is a lot of psychology in the drawing process. When we are trying to represent our subject from an angle rather than straight-on, we may subconsciously try to make the image too symmetrical. The reference photo for this project is a threequarter view and needs to be drawn accordingly.
