Since the adages were so much a part of my father, you’ll find a sprinkling of them in this chapter, and, no doubt as you read them you will hear Herbert’s voice in your mind, as well. I was lucky to know Herbert A. Simon for 58 12 years—my whole life. He inspired and motivated me from as far back as my conscious memory goes. It is from him that I developed my love of nature and the outof-doors generally; the sun, moon, planets, and stars; music; reading; walking; intellectual inquiry; tennis; deep conversation; board games and crossword puzzles; bird watching; art; an understanding of right and wrong; the interconnectedness of everything in our lives; and oh, so many other bits that enhance life.
