Despite Lowry's perennial fear of being deemed a plagiarist, however, the identifications are honourably assimilated into the intellectual attempt he is making in the book to portray the psychic development ofhis hero. The attempt is the more brave given that the author's own mental development may have been anything but assured. The diverse influences are by no means always successfully folded into the texture of the style, but Ultramarine is a brave and interesting first novel. It probes with some acuity at the psyche of an inexperienced and lonely young man, who, however gauchely and clumsily, is attempting to strike a rapport with his fellow men and with his own developing conscience.

He once joked proudly to Aiken that he managed to make nothing happen in his novels. An inordinate burden is thrown upon style to carry plot. Few Lowry novels occupy more than a short period of consecutive present time. By offering four principal characters and by tracing their past interlinkages in time, as well as their present emotional state, Lowry avoids this feeling of thinness in Under the Volcano. EIsewhere he is always alarmingly at the mercy of the intellectual performance managed by his one isolated protagonist.

I shall always understand if you do! (pp. 168-9) It is this vapid gush which sparks Dana's imaginary reply, ineluding the discussion of Andy al ready cited. It brings Janet and Andy as 38 Maleolm Lowry dose together as the novel ever allows them. But the final impression is of a brave and meaningful experiment with style which has not succeeded. Even allowing that Under the Volcano comes fifteen years later, the difference in the quality of style between the two novels IS enormous. The last chapter of Ultramarine also contains other experiments with style which Lowry was trying out.
