During the 1970s royalties from consumer electronics patents reached $100 million a year. The profits from such licensing may have deterred RCA from building plants or even marketing aggressively abroad. Government contracts dropped off after 1945, but with the coming of the cold war, RCA’s government business boomed. These contracts pulled the RCA Laboratories even further away from research on radio-related products. For example, RCA joined with GE and Bendix to build radar for the SAGE air defense project (mentioned in chapter 4).
