Some of this literature has been surveyed in Jerker Holm's doctoral dissertation (Holm 1993) and I direct interested readers to that work and to the recent textbook by Osborne and Rubinstein (1994, particularly chapter 9) for an excellent introduction to the frontiers of the field. 28 Finally, there is the crucial contribution by Binmore (1987, 1988) which, like those by Simon and Scarf is essentially, a wholly new research program. I am convinced that this will lead to the genesis of an entirely new sub-branch of economics which would be best called algorithmic economics, on the same footing as Simon's behavioral economics, Scarf's computable general equilibrium, and Vernon Smith's experimental economics.

I suspect that what I have called computable economics will, eventually, turn out to have a large intersection with Binmore's algorithmic economics without, however, being a proper subset of it. At this time, the results and conceptual developments in algorithmic economics, singlehandedly created and nurtured by Binmore, seem to be confined to game-theoretic issues; but a close reading of what I consider to be the two classics of algorithmic economics (Binmore 1987, 1988), should convince any reader that the methodological and epistemological agendas have wider scope and deeper aims.

Now, what is the meaning of binary relations over a set of alternatives facing an economic agent? To frame the question in a way that is relevant to my aims, note that a binary relation, say over χ, is a propositional function with truth values (true) and (false) that unambiguously decides42 a membership relation for an ordered pair. Then the recursion-theoretic question would be: is this membership 42 There is an implicit acceptance of the law of the excluded middle in the face of countable infinities at this point and, hence, would immediately disqualify standard choice theory from the constructivist's point of view.
