It is up to the researcher to decide upon a number and set of clusters that maximizes within-cluster similarity while minimizing similarities between clusters. For example, one critical step in a cluster analysis involves examining a dendrogram, which forms successive clusters or groups of participants ranging from the total sample, in which case no clusters are formed, to a single cluster comprised of all cases contributing data. In the dendrogram shown in Figure 7 (from Goslin & Floccia, 2007), the left-most initials represent each case in the data set.
Curvilinear relationship A non-linear relationship between two variables, such that when it is plotted on a graph, the result is not a straight line. One such example in applied linguistics research is the relationship between strategy use and proficiency. Hong-Nam and Leavell (2006), for example, found greater use of strategies by intermediate learners, with fewer strategies used by beginner and advanced learners. Stevens (1999), likewise, identified a number of curvilinear relationships between age-related effects and self-reported L 2 proficiency (see Figure 9).
