There was a small solution sac indicating melting into the surrounding glass and small rounded nodules protruding slightly along the perimeter of the stone. Petrographic analysis revealed the presence of individual nodules, as shown in Figures 7(b). The characteristic shape and the high birefringence indicated that the nodules were likely zirconia. SEM analysis revealed irregularly shaped nodules, as shown in Figure 7(c). EDX showed that the nodules were composed of zirconia. Between the nodules, the composition was 75th Conference on Glass Problems · 19 Comparison of SEM/EDX Analysis to Petrographic Techniques an alumina rich glassy matrix (Figures 7(d) and 7(e)).

The source of the stone was likely silica scum that had recrystallized. 16 · 75th Conference on Glass Problems Comparison of SEM/EDX Analysis to Petrographic Techniques (a) Photograph (b) Thin Sections Showing Secondary Crystals (c) SEM Photomicrographs (d) EDX of Crystals and Grains Figure 4. Case Study #1 Stone Sample #5 Conclusion from Case Study #1 SEM/EDX analysis provided the same identification of the stones as with the petrographic techniques. Stone sample #1 exhibited primary grains of quartz with a small amount of conversion to tridymite laths.
