His motivation for using the novel form is that this is the most effective way to promulgate his beliefs. Seldom is the propagandist interested in the novel apart from its use as a vehicle for his message. The Jungle is neither social protest nor naturalistic. That its effect on contemporary readers in 1905 and 1906 was the same as that of a social protest novel is no measure of either the book or the author's intentions. Sinclair's oft-quoted remark about aiming for the heart and hitting the stomach is revealing.
That is his virtue. He is not a good musician; self-taught, he plays vigorously, not well. With his "wizened-up little face" and striped shirt and military pants that are too short, Tamoszius would be a figure of ridicule if he were not a musician. Many of the minor characters are no more than stereotypes: for example, the bartender with "waxed black mustaches" and a "carefully oiled curl plastered against one side of his forehead" or the policeman who is fat. Others are given more depth, as, for example, some of the couples dancing.
Also revealing is the fact that Sinclair was commissioned by the Socialist weekly Appeal to Reason to write the book. Clearly, the purpose of The Jungle is to advocate Socialism as the only answer to the wage slavery enforced by capitalism. The book points out that labor unions have failed because owners can form even more powerful associations. The answer is public ownership of the means of production; in short, a radical restructuring of American society. Only by this means can the workingman gain freedom.
