Keep this activity simple, fun, and short (five to ten minutes at the most). Remember, our goal is not to do onset-rime activities; rather, the goal is to read and enjoy good books. Sometimes we forget this. We get so involved with our phonics drills, standardized tests, comprehension worksheets, syllable dividing, and finding CVC letter patterns that we lose sight of the big picture: Real humans read books to enjoy them or to get information from them. All instruction should reflect this purpose.

As part of being a literacy teacher, you are also involving your students in the act of writing on a regular basis (see chapters 18–22). Students should be writing about their experiences. They should be expressing their thoughts, feelings, and observations. Students love to read the stories written by students their age. After these stories have been edited, collect them and create books for the classroom. You can create books by individual students, by theme or subject, or simply create random collections of students’ writing.
