Lessons from comparative studies tell us that the difference between man and other animals is not concerned with body growth but with the specialisation of the brain. For example, the rhinocerus at the age of four years has a body weight of about one ton yet its brain only weighs a few hundred grams. 5 kg and has virtually completed all its growth. In the rat, there is evidence that the flux of cholesterol in LDL (presumably reflecting centrifugal cholesterol transport) is several fold greater than that of cholesterol in HDL; if so HDL could not be the major vehicle for centripetal transport. e. depleted of HDL, LDL and VLDL) is an effective receptor for cholesterol. The role of HDL in centripetal lipid transport is the subject of intensive current research. At the same time the origin of HDL, and regulation of its metabolism are under renewed scrutiny.
