The latter tells an unpleasant truth when she accuses Casaubon of speaking 'as if I were something you had to contend against'. There is a moving contrast between Casaubon's trembling hand and Dorothea's firm one, but Dorothea finds 'her whole soul melted into tender alarm' when she finds Casaubon 'in some bodily distress'. ' Chapter 30 There is a quiet indication that Lydgate is in advance of his time through his use of the stethoscope (George Eliot's research is inevitably meticulous) on Casaubon, and Mr Brooke contributes his usual irrelevance by suggesting that Casaubon goes fishing and has Dorothea read authors who are a 'little broad' to him, like Smollett.
It is a fine phrase to define her deprivation, emotional and sexual, for characteristically she likes to 'feel alone with the earth and sky'. A superb description of the effect of Rome on her, the collossal impact of art and religion, the degraded past and the 'sordid present', is reinforced by an omniscient comment on human vulnerability: If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence.
We think immediately of Dorothea, but Caleb is, delicately, subduedly, blaming himself for putting his name to Fred's bill and thinking of his wife's suffering. It is a genuine expression of love. Mary's own acknowledged love for Fred, with its firm moral basis and insistence on his becoming responsible, reassures Caleb. We note too old Featherstone's insight into the reasons for Caleb's visit. ' - observes the author laconically, and this gives Rosamond the opportunity, without being devious, to get Lydgate into the house, and 'to show a pretty anxiety conflicting with her sense of what was becoming'.
