Two factors are at work. First, the speed of the earth in its orbit variesIt is fastest when it is at its perihelion and slowest at its aphelion (the two 'pointed' ends of its elliptical orbit when it is respectively nearest and furthest from the sun). Secondly, the earth's axis is tilted with respect to the plane of its orbit; this means that the motion of the earth in its orbit has two components, one parallel and the other perpendicular to the equator. These two components, the parallel component in particular, vary with the seasons.
