One example can be seen in the way that schools fragment learners off into age-related groups. The result is that little account is taken of the usefulness of examining different learners' approaches to learning as a result of their different ages and experience. In effect, schools isolate the learning potential of learners by designing learning around age-based theories of learner development. The result of all of this for schools is single-track departments and teaching groups, where teachers are passionate about their own subject but ignorant of the one taught in the very next room, which those same learners will have to visit in perhaps 40 minutes' time.
It implies an awareness amongst staff of the competing influences and contested nature of educational reform.
