Both tips, that of the part that remains fixed over the interface and that of the part that breaks off, can be used for scanning. But before that, it is required to wash away the NaOH residuals from the tips and to remove the metal oxide from the surfaces that have been produced during etching. AFM Probes Considered to be the most versatile probe type for present and future SPM implementations, the AFM probe is a cantilever with or without an integrated sharp tip “hanging” from its free end. The fixed end is attached to a relatively thick, millimeter- sized slab, the chip, to ease handling.
