While Prendick's desperate attempts to play the role of prophet mock Christianity as a mythology which has become incredible and inadequate to the discerning mind, there is a serious implication that an efficient mythology of some kind may still be necessary for civilisation. Some of the Beast People claim they can follow the Law without the Moreau myth, but in the end rational commitment proves powerless to control their animal impulses.
The Time Traveller and Nunez are each in a similar position, lifted above pathos by their experience of a greater reality. This is also how Wells seems to have seen himself in his early years - an outsider, doomed by ill-health, a failure by the world's standards, yet the forerunner of a new age which would sooner or later break apart the stuffy, ignoble world around him. However, a repulsively knowing materialist, Dr Crump, is able to cure her by administering a fattening diet, and it is the Vicar who closes the story by dying, terminally demoralised by the irreconcilable conflict between his ideal and reality.
