The Time Traveller and Nunez are each in a similar position, lifted above pathos by their experience of a greater reality. It seems for a while as if the girl may be going to follow the couple heavenward when she begins to wilt in a pretty manner recalling Dickensian children such as Little Nell and Paul Dombey. However, a repulsively knowing materialist, Dr Crump, is able to cure her by administering a fattening diet, and it is the Vicar who closes the story by dying, terminally demoralised by the irreconcilable conflict between his ideal and reality.
