Example text

Though the novel is a beautifully integrated work , in which no single part can be properl y discussed without reference to the other parts , it may be help ful to think of the book from three different perspectives, as a fictional narrative, as an account of moral and psychological development, and as a novel about different aspects of society. 1 NARRATIVE As a narrative Great Expectations abounds in exciting events , mysteries, unexpected revelations, extraordinary characters, violence , love stories, humour, and a modestly happy ending.

The Estella he meets now has lost much of her beauty and her wealth, but has learned from her experiences too, so they accept each other in honesty for what they are. This change in Estella reminds us that, though Pip is the main protagonist through whom Dickens discusses his theme of upbringing, dehumanisation and love, there are other characters in the novel who also illustrate aspects of his great theme, including not only Estella and Miss Havisham, but even Mrs Joe and Magwitch to some extent.

Will Pip and Herbert succeed in saving Magwitch? Who are Estella's real parents? By raising these kinds of questions Dickens continues to hold the reader's interest in something like the way a writer of detective stories does. Another way Dickens uses to keep the reader's interest is by telling a love story about the fluctuating relationship between a man and a woman, and though Great Expectations concentrates on the story of Pip and Estella, and we are never quite sure whether Pip will marry Estella or not, it is important to remember that Pip's is not the only love story in the novel, for we also hear of Joe and Biddy, as well as Herbert and Clara, and of Mr Wemmick and Miss Skiffins.
