If a scale is misread on a meter, or a number is transcribed incorrectly, this is not regarded as an error in the context of data analysis, but as a mistake or blunder which (in principle) can be avoided. Errors exist in all experiments and though their effects may be minimised in a number of ways, such as controlling the physical environment in which an experiment is performed, they cannot be eliminated completely. Chapter 5 deals with the identification and treatment of errors, but it is appropriate to introduce here two important categories of errors: random and systematic.
